Herbs: Storing Parsley, Cilantro, and More
Herbs are versatile ingredients that add a burst of flavor to any dish. However, they are delicate and need proper storage to stay fresh and usable.
General Tips for Storing Herbs
Trim the Stems: For herbs like parsley and cilantro, trimming the stems can help them absorb water and stay fresh longer.
Store Like Flowers: Place herb bunches in a jar with about an inch of water, stems down, and cover them loosely with a plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator for best results.
Keep Dry: Excess moisture can cause wilting and spoilage. If storing in bags or containers, include a paper towel to absorb any condensation.
Don’t Wash Until Ready to Use: Washing herbs before storage can introduce moisture, leading to faster spoilage.
Storage Solutions for Specific Herbs
Parsley and Cilantro: Store upright in a jar of water in the refrigerator, covered with a plastic bag. Change the water every few days to keep them fresh.
Chives: Wrap in a damp paper towel and store in a sealed container or bag in the refrigerator. Use within 5-7 days.
Mint and Basil: These herbs are sensitive to cold. Store at room temperature in a jar of water, like a bouquet. Avoid refrigerating basil as it can blacken.
Extra Tips for Longevity
Freeze Herbs: Chop herbs and freeze them in olive oil or water using ice cube trays. This makes it easy to add them to recipes later.
Dry Herbs: Air-dry or use a dehydrator to preserve herbs for long-term storage. Once dried, store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
Revive Wilted Herbs: Soak limp herbs in a bowl of ice water for 10-15 minutes to restore their crispness.
By following these tips, your herbs will stay fresh and flavorful, ensuring you get the most out of your CSA box.
